Catch-Up & Study!

1. If you haven't already, finish What in the World is Going On? Document and the Prezi on your article. Submit it in the February 23rd comment's section.

2. Review Middle East & Europe Geography for this week's retest.

3. Cultural Patterns: Racism & Prejudice--> New/Used Vocabulary for current unit.

4. Choose 10 vocabulary words from Cultural Patterns: Racism & Prejudice. Put them into a sentence, with an example. This may require some Googling. Post in TODAY's comments section.

  3. My family lives in a barrio. Ex. East Los Angeles.
    He is outraged how his ethnicity prevented him from getting the job. Ex. Scottish
    They take pride in living in the ghetto because it motivated them. Ex. Watts
    She lives in an ethnic enclave with the rest of her family. Ex. Little Tokyo
    The police officers abuse of authority was taken to court. Ex. fourth amendment
    They got accepted into the top university because of affirmative action. Ex. minority in UCD
    He was fed up with the negativity brought along by stereotypes. Ex. Jews are “good with money”
    They did not let her lift the heavy box because of sexism. Ex. Women are “weak”
    They discriminated him for being a black male. Ex. Treyvon Martin
    They do not support gay marriage, it is not in their culture. Ex. Religious morals

    - In society one is judged based on one's race.
    - Hispanics, African Americans, Whites etc.
    Racism:
    - Racism has always been a problem since the end of slavery.
    - Blacks have a higher unemployed rate than whites
    Sexism:
    - Sexism in the ways of religion has always been a conflict.
    - Woman can not become priest.
    Stereotypes:
    - People believe that the stereotypes said are true.
    - All Mexicans eat frijoles. Chinese people can't drive. etc.
    Discrimination:
    - No matter where you live there is always a part of discrimination.
    - Inappropriate jokes, name calling ("Niggers, wetbacks, border hoppers, etc")
    Abuse of Authority:
    - In most cases the main cause of the incident was because of abuse of authority.
    - Movie: Crash
    Ethnicity:
    - One in some places is judged by one's ethnicity.
    - Africa, Aztecs, German etc.
    Ghetto:
    - People who live in watts are referred as "ghetto".
    - People who live in watts or the projects.
    Ethnic Group:
    - Majority of people have a more common ethnic group.
    - Religion: Christians vs Catholics
    Ageism:
    - In some parts ageism is seen as a barrer for some people.
    - In mexico people of age 40+ are considered not qualified to work no more.

  5. Racism has been in this world for many and many of years.
    *Slavery was predominantly African/African Americans because of their skin color and skills and consider as property.
    What we need is affirmative action for minorities in the United States.
    *More Black/African Americans and Latinos should be employed as much as non-minorities.
    Some people are prejudice and regret their prejudice thoughts later on.
    *Seeing a Persian person and assume that they are related to Osama Bin Laden
    Stereotypes breaks society apart.
    *White people jog and walk their dogs every day. Black people have dreads and smoke weed.
    Sexism is not always towards women but towards men also.
    *Girls can't play basketball. Boy can not cheerlead or play volleyball.
    There was a lot of patriarchy debates within the men and women.
    * Men rules the household. They have the "pants" in the relationship.
    The glass ceiling effect is still active.
    *Businesses may make excuses to stop minorities to not have a job. Which may cause affirmative actions.
    Scapegoating was really active in the slavery time.
    *White people would usually blame a Black male for something he did not do.
    As the time goes by, more and more protests are active because of the police's abuse of authority.
    * Police are killing and abusing innocent people
    *If someone is doing wrong the police do more than they are supposed to do and that causes injuries, death, or sexual harassment to the person.
    When I lived in Arizona for a month, it was known as a barrio. Everyone there talked Spanish.

    -Racism has been in this world for many years.
    -Alot of people can be prejudice without noticing.
    -There is no such thing as a stereotype you just judge people.
    -Police are killing and abusing innocent people.
    -If someone is breaking the law police do more than they are supposed to do and that causes injuries, death, or sexual harassment to the person.
    - In some parts ageism is seen as a barrier for some people.
    -No matter where you live there is always a part of racial discrimination.
    -People judge on your ethnicity rather than who you really are.
    -People who live in watts are referred as "ghetto".

    a.People classify others by their race.
    b. skin color, height, appearance…
    2) prejudice:
    a. Sometimes we don’t realize that we are prejudice against others.
    b.opinion, thought, act…
    3) stereotype:
    a. Stereotypes are common when you judge before you know.
    b. classify as gangsters, shy, unfriendly…
    4) sexism:
    a. Sexism can be against women but at some point everyone is discriminated.
    b. 1800’s women were only allowed to be housewives.
    5) ageism
    a. Ageism is more common today because sometimes older people are discriminated by younger ones.
    b. your old and can’t work, get sick easily, need to rest more…
    6) discrimination:
    a. Discrimination is all over the world and everybody might be discriminated by someone else.
    b. age, race, pregnant, language…
    7) abuse of authority:
    a. Sometimes people with power are abusive and they can abuse of authority.
    b. violent, kill, insult...
    8) culture:
    a. everybody has their own culture that might have been passed down through generations.
    b. beliefs, customs, traditions...
    9) ethnicity:
    a. Ethnicity is a common way to discriminate people.
    b. origin, religion, language...
    10) barrio:
    a. You can tell that a barrio is where people mostly speak spanish.
    b. spanish word for neighborhood.

    a. My family comes from a barrio filled with Mexicans just like them.

    a. People often stereotype before getting to know people.
    b. That guy with baggy pants is a criminal.
    3. Sexism
    a. Men are often sexist to women than women are sexist to men
    b. classifying girls as weak, submissive and dependent on men
    4. Scapegoating
    a. Many people commit such crimes and get away with it by scapegoating people who would otherwise be seen as innocent.
    b. criminals who didn’t commit the crime are locked up, "i did it take me"
    5. Assimilation
    a. Never has my family taken into consideration the idea of assimilation as they were not born in this country.
    b. americanizing, losing your roots, losing Mexican roots and becoming American
    6. Ghetto
    a. My friends are right, we do live in a Ghetto community occupied by mostly latinos followed by African-Americans.
    b. Watts, East LA, South Central
    7. Patriarchy
    a. Patriarchy is seen in communities such as Watts and South Central as men want to do everything.
    b. men work women stay home
    8. Segregation
    a. Segregation might be illegal and technically doesn’t exist, but in reality it is still evident these days.
    b. whites vs blacks, white school vs black school, white bathroom vs black bathroom, white community vs black community, whites on one side blacks on the other
    9. Ageism
    a. Ageism occurs every day more commonly with older people than younger people.
    b. old people get sick easily and should not work
    10. Abuse of Authority
    a. Corrupt leaders are the ones who clearly demonstrate abuse of authority.
    b. Stalin killing Soviets, Hitler killing Jews
