Africa & U.S. Geography Retest Prep

1. Review Geography for this week's retest. 
  • This week: Africa & U.S. Retest next Thursday 3/12 & Friday 3/13
  • Up Next: South America 3/19 & 3/20
  • Retake: (during Student Support on Wed or after school on Thursday): Middle East & Europe
3. Cultural Patterns: Racism & Prejudice--> New/Used Vocabulary for current unit.

4. Choose 10 new vocabulary words from Cultural Patterns: Racism & Prejudice (not the same from last week)
. Put them into a sentence, with an example. This may require some Googling. Post in TODAY's comments section.

  1. 1)Social Distance:
    ex; how a group is distant by its culture as if a jamaican man and a mexican women were to get marrie
    sent: The social distance between rich and poor is common

    2)Ethnicity;
    ex: I when a mexican man were to conversate with a Scottland man
    sent: The college in riverside has their own ethnicity group

    3)Chain Migration
    ex. My dad had migrated to the US as for my uncles and cousins
    sent. I am here today thanks to my dad who had started the migration chain

    4)Assimilation;
    ex. When Mexicans migrate to US they need to assimilate in order to provide for their fam
    sent. The Police needs to assimilate the immigrants in order to get their green cards

    5) Culture:
    ex. I have a different culture than most people, i celebrate christmas with tamales
    sent. The school has a diversity of culture

    6) Blue Wall of Silence:
    ex. The police in the movie Crash did not want to send a racist report on his old partner because its what made him gain control

  2. 1-Prejudice
    Example: When people judge others based on things they have heard others say about that certain someone.
    Sentence: People tend to be very prejudice when it comes to others.

    2-Stereotype
    Example: People sometimes think “All Mexicans wear sombreros and own a donkey.”
    Sentence: People think everyone race is the same. Like, if you are Mexican they think that you like spicy foods. When that’s not always the case.

    3-Scapegoating
    Example: When the Central Park Five got blamed for the raping a lady when it really wasn’t them.
    Sentence: Many people around the world have been scapegoated for things they have not done.

    4-Discrimination
    Example: When someone is not liked because of his or her sex.
    Sentence: Many LGBT people are not liked by others and are being discriminated against.

    5- Abuse of Authority
    Example: When a police officer thinks he or she can do whatever they like because they are the authority.
    Sentence: Many police officers Abuse their Authority in many different ways.

    6-Culture
    Example: When different families have different things they believe in or different traditions than other families.
    Sentence: My family has a different culture than my neighbors.

    7-Cultural Adaptation
    Example: Doing things from a different culture, which your original culture doesn’t do.
    Sentence: Ms. Kelly can talk in a different language apart from the rest of her family. So she had a Cultural Adaptation.

    8-Segregation
    Example: When people or color couldn’t attend the same schools as white kids.
    Sentence: Segregation separated people. It changed in a way because of Martin Luther King Jr.

    9-Barrio
    Example: A place where the people are mostly Spanish speaking.
    Sentence: Mexico streets are considered Barrio’s.
    10-Assimilation
    Example: Immigrations are told to learn to speak English if they want a job.
    Sentence: Many people have to learn another language in order to be able to communicate with another group of people. It is called Assimilation.

  3. 1. Discrimination
    Often times outsiders coming into a community discriminate people who live there based on the surroundings.
    Ex: African-Americans are criminals
    2. Ethnic Conflict
    Ethnic conflict can lead to battles which determine the borders
    Ex: Mexican-American War
    3. Adaptive Strategies
    We are able to survive through such use of adaptive strategies.
    Ex: living in Watts
    4. Prejudice
    People are often prejudice when seeing a person for the first time ever.
    Ex: that guy looks like a criminal/gangster
    5. cultural adaptation
    People who come to the US often display signs of cultural adaptation and see it as a chance to start from scratch.
    Ex: americanizing,
    6. Ethnic Neighborhood
    I live in an ethnic neighborhood with people of the same race as me.
    Ex: watts, south-central, east La
    7. Ethnic Homeland
    California, an area occupied by mostly latinos, is considered to be an ethnic homeland as it was once a part of Mexico.
    Ex: California, Arizona, Texas, Florida
    8. Ethnic Landscape
    New York is considered to be an ethnic landscape as there is people from all over the world.
    Ex: Missouri, Los Angeles, New York
    9. Acculturation
    In certain areas like Arizona, California and states in the west coast, people have witness the acculturation of the Mexican culture.
    Ex: Los Angeles, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado,
    10. Chain Migration
    There has been a chain migration to Los Angeles from Mexico as they seek better job opportunities
    Ex: Mexico to LA, Arizona...Asia to US
